Second Hand Model Railways

Model trains have been popular for several centuries but just recently more and more people have begun to see an interest in model railways and collecting model trains. However when first starting this hobby it can be costly as new model trains, tracks and scenery are all very expensive items to buy and to create the perfect model railroad you would need all of these items right away.

Second hand model railways can be bought from a number of stores all over the country and people often buy these over new ones as they are generally much cheaper and the older used trains tend to have a lot of history and character to them which a lot of model train collectors enjoy to see on their model railway.

The internet has made buying second hand model railways easier as well; it’s now possible to buy second hand model railways directly from the past owner on auction websites. This makes these second hand model railways much more reasonably priced than those that are new and generally even cheaper than those bought second hand from a specialist model store.

The important part of buying second hand model trains is making sure they are of the quality that you need, there is no point buying a model train to take it home to find that the train is badly marked or worse, broken. Check the train carefully, the wheels in particular are prone to breaking so check them first, if the train has any small parts it would be wise to check them carefully as well. Don’t worry to much about the paint on the model train though as it is easy to re-paint the train once you get home.

Have a look to see who made the train; it’s always best if the train was made by a trusted manufacturer such as Hornby or Bachman for example. This will also mean that if you every break or scratch the screen new parts and paint will also be available. This is especially important if you have children in the house that may touch and break the model railway trains. The second hand model railways are very delicate.

I highly recommend that you look into buying a second hand model train as these could save you a lot of money and you also have a good chance of finding a train that is old and unique. Just make sure you buy your trains at a good price, that they are made by a good manufacturer and that you buy the train from a reputable supplier.

Quick Tip #1

Buy From Specialist Model Stores – I recommend that you always buy your model trains from specialist stores as there are often experts in these stores who can help you find the right train for you. You may also find that model trains are cheaper from specialist stores.

Quick Tip #2

Start Small - When you buy your first model train, don’t spend a lot of money. You should start with a fairly low cost model. There is no point spending hundreds of dollars only to decide after just a few short weeks that you don’t enjoy collecting trains.
