Model Train Supplies and Accessories |
In this article I am going to talk in detail about the supplies and accessories that you will need for your model train collection. Train collecting is a creative hobby that can be very rewarding and fun to do.
Lets assume that you have already decided where you are going to build your train set, first of all you will need to choose a gauge size, this is going to depend on how much space you have available.
What type of platform is the second thing that you are going to need to think about carefully, there are ready made platforms available to buy. These generally include hills, tunnels, trees and other train accessories.
However many amateur model train collectors buy the supplies and accessories needed and create their own platforms using chipboard or plywood. This platform will be custom made so will be the right size and shape that you need. Once you have the basic platform it is time to move on to the next step, develop it and make it look better.
This is where you can get creative; you will need to decide between a city landscape or a country landscape. The choice is totally yours to choose. If you decide to build a city you can buy ready made buildings and accessories like cars and roadside lampposts, bus stops and bins.
If you decide to go with the countryside landscape then you may wish to include things like rocks, mountains, rives, and tunnels for your model train. You can buy these or make these accessories yourself; you will need to right tools and supplies to create these though. You will need a rubber molding solution, strong glue, paint and plaster. With these basic supplies you can create your own rocks and other accessories for your model railway.
Of course, you first need to setup the basic track and train set layout before you even consider the model train supplies and accessories that you need. The train and track are the most important part of your model train set.

Quick Tip #2
Start Small - When you buy your first model train, don’t spend a lot of money. You should start with a fairly low cost model. There is no point spending hundreds of dollars only to decide after just a few short weeks that you don’t enjoy collecting trains.
