Model Train Sets

Once you have decided that you are going to be buying a model train set there are a few things that you need to consider. There are a whole range of different model train sets that you can buy; buying a model train set can be a daunting experience.

There are different types of model train sets available, those for children and those that are more suitable for adults, you can buy plastic train sets or the higher quality metal ones, from these two simple examples you can see that there are a lot of different choices to choose from - going into a store without any background information can be quite daunting.

Children’s Model Train Sets

When buying a train set for children you should always think of interest first, many children quickly become board of toys they have no interest in. Watching a train go round and round a track can become boring very quickly, the more corners and features the train set has the better.

Buying a model train sets that include carriages and wagons is ideal if you want to make the train set that little bit more interesting to children. Hornby train sets are the most popular for children as they are interesting and easy to set up. The tracks on Hornby train sets can also be increased.

I highly recommend that before you buy extra pieces for a train set that you make sure the children finds the model train set interesting and continues to use it - there is no point spending hundreds of dollars on a train set if the interest is quickly lost.

Adults Model Train Sets

If you are buying a train set for an adult (maybe yourself?) you should be looking for something a little different in a train set. Adults generally don't become board as quick as young children and appreciate the detail of the model train sets.

However buying a detailed train set can be expensive however if the interest is there it is certainly money well spent.

Most adults prefer a historic train set, a replica of a train that was used years ago are often very popular. The Orient Express and the Flying Scotsman are two of the most popular traditional trains that people often collect.

Quick Tip #2

Start Small - When you buy your first model train, don’t spend a lot of money. You should start with a fairly low cost model. There is no point spending hundreds of dollars only to decide after just a few short weeks that you don’t enjoy collecting trains.
