Model railroad trains are awesome. The detail of these trains is often amazing and the attention to detail is eye opening. No model trains however are better that a good quality antique model train. If you are looking at buying an antique model train you will soon realise the difference between the older trains and the newer ons, the old, traditional trains are usually much better in quality, appearance and detail.
There are a number of places you can buy vintage model trains for a reasonable price. Second hand model train stores are the place that most people buy these trains from as they often have quite a range of model trains and they are usually very well priced. Experienced railroaders often run these stores so if you are still unsure what you are looking to buy they will be able to help and advise you on the best train for you.
Another place you should look for model trains is online auction websites such as eBay.com. These places have people from all around the world selling antique model trains that they have for sale so you will find a massive range available. These trains will all vary in size, shape, design, color and quality. You should avoid buying model trains online that have been damaged as it's difficult to tell if you would be able to repair them.
Most antique trains are built to the traditional steam train design and may include carriages and other special features. Unlike today's models they will almost always be metal which is a real plus if you are looking to keep them a long time. Plastic model trains often get damaged very easy making them a bad investment.
Before buying an antique model train why not do a little research on the train and design? Often a lot of older trains are replicas of historic trains and it's very common to find a limited edition design. Of course, you should also check the model train throughout before buying. Is the antique model train damages? Does it have any large scratches on the paintwork? Can any damage be repaired? Does it fit in with any trains you may already have? Think about all these questions before even considering buying an antique model train.

Quick Tip #2
Start Small - When you buy your first model train, don’t spend a lot of money. You should start with a fairly low cost model. There is no point spending hundreds of dollars only to decide after just a few short weeks that you don’t enjoy collecting trains.
